Ever Been Shot At?

Denise Saavedra has. She was in the Las Vegas Federal Courthouse on January 4th, 2010 when a gunman opened fire, killing Officer Stan Cooper. Denise was at the Brave Christian officer's side when he met Jesus. Here's their story of that morning. Click to listen.

Emergencies? Really?

We gave our daughter (10) a phone for emergencies. You know: Kidnapped, attacked, bleeding, broken, stalked.

My phone rang at work today. It was her. I panicked. OH NO! What's wrong?! Maybe she's calling from the trunk of a car.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, Honey?"

"Trey (brother) is bothering me."

I think we need to reconstitute what an emergency is.

Answered Prayer

God is good.

In little things, in big things, feast or famine, life or death, He's good.

I was frustrated. I spent half an hour fiddling with my computer and I couldn't figure my problem out. I was almost at my wit's end when I thought "Maybe I should Pray."

I did. I asked God's help. 45 seconds later, I stumbled onto the answer to my problem. I think sometimes God lets us get to the end of our rope and to the place where we cry out. And then he delights in answering our prayer. He'll share his Glory with no one. And he loves to be the one to come to our rescue.

Blessed be his name. Thanks, Lord.

Worry

You know when Jesus said not to worry? "Who of you by worring can add even a single moment to his life?" Well...I got a lesson in worry last week. I got some second hand information from a family member that my mother might have cancer. I let it ruin the day. I worried, cried, got angry, and spent most of the day in fear.

Then my mother called me. We spoke voice to voice and it turns out that family member who broke the news to me was WRONG!!!! My mother is fine. She had some tests for cancer last week and they were negative. Holy cow. Talk about worry for no reason. But I let assumptions and speculation ruin the whole day.

Two lessons here:

1. Proper communication would have solved the source of stress in the first place.
2. Even if there had been bad news, would worrying REALLY have done any good?

Would worry have healed my mother? Nope. In fact, studies show that worry actually SHORTENS one's life. How's that for irony? We spend our lives worrying about things that are bad for us...and in the end, WORRY itself will do the harm.

If you're like me, you care deeply about the family and about parenting. My son asked me yesterday, "Daddy, why did you have kids?" I said "Son, two reasons."

1. I love you guys.
2. I hate getting my own cereal and mowing the lawn.

God bless me. Father of the year.

Jesus in a bruise?

Did you see this vid of the woman who went to the doctor and they found a bruise on her arm that looks like the face of Jesus?
